The breakfast diet plan for the kidney patients can be quite daunting. You need to know not only about what foods are good or bad for you but something that is satisfying and enjoyable as well. A kidney-friendly breakfast begins with food that is healthy for your heart and kidney and does not overburden the organ. Since every kidney patient is different from each other and each meal you take should be planned by your kidney specialist. Here are some dos and don’ts of what you can eat in your breakfast:
1. Less salt: Excess consumption of salt i.e. sodium increases your blood pressure and so an ideal diet should contain less than 2300 milligrams of sodium. Rinse-off canned vegetables and fruits before consuming, cook fresh food from scratch rather than having frozen breakfast.
2. A right amount of protein: Consuming a large amount of protein causes the kidney to function harder. This reduces its capacity to function in a healthy way thereby making it impaired. So, you should avoid food such as milk, cheese, meat, and eggs and replace them with wheat grains, oats etc. While patients already on dialysis and transplant should consume high protein foods in their breakfast.
3. Fresh fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetables rich in potassium can raise the blood potassium level. Damage kidneys build up potassium in the blood causing heart problems. Soak fresh fruits and vegetables half an hour beforehand to allow the potassium to get rinsed away.
4. Fat: Our body needs fat to get energy and helps to stay healthy. But too much fat can make you gain weight and reduce heart health. Healthy fat called unsaturated fat such as olive oil, peanut oil should be consumed while butter, meat should be avoided.
5. A kidney patient should never skip breakfast as this drops blood sugar level causing weakness in the body of the patient. Along with the diet plan, ayurvedic treatment for kidney disease can help the patients manage the symptoms of kidney failure.
